If you follow poker even casually, you'll run into these three acronyms constantly. Each represents a genuinely different kind of tournament series, with its own history, structure, and prestige - understanding the differences helps make sense of how professional poker's competitive calendar actually works.

WSOP - World Series of Poker

The WSOP is poker's oldest and most storied championship series, running annually since 1970. Its centerpiece is the Main Event, widely considered poker's unofficial world championship, but the modern WSOP spans dozens of individual bracelet events each summer in Las Vegas, across virtually every poker variant and stake level, from a few hundred dollars to six-figure buy-ins.

Beyond the summer festival, the WSOP also runs WSOP Circuit stops at casinos throughout the year, awarding rings rather than bracelets, and has a fully developed online presence through WSOP.com and international partnerships (including GGPoker), letting players compete for bracelets without traveling to Las Vegas at all. WPT - World Poker Tour

Launched in 2002, the World Poker Tour was a genuine turning point for poker as televised entertainment - its early broadcasts, using the hole-card camera format, are widely credited alongside the WSOP's own ESPN coverage for helping fuel the early-2000s poker boom. Unlike the WSOP's single-city summer festival, the WPT runs as a season-long tour, moving between casino partner venues across multiple countries, with each season culminating in a Tournament of Champions or season finale event. WPT titles are prestigious specifically because they require sustained travel and performance across a full season's stops, not a single concentrated event window.

EPT - European Poker Tour

Launched by PokerStars in 2004, the European Poker Tour brought the WPT's season-long, multi-stop model specifically to the European market, running events across major cities throughout the continent each season. The EPT has been particularly influential in growing poker's popularity across Europe, and its stops are known for often drawing some of the largest live tournament fields in the world outside the WSOP itself, aided heavily by PokerStars' online satellite ecosystem feeding players into live Main Events.
